On April 25, 2023, the European Commission published regulation 2023/915 on maximum levels for certain contaminants in foodstuffs.

This regulation repealed regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 and became effective on May 15, 2023.

The main changes in this new regulation regarding mycotoxins:

The prohibition of detoxification for all food containing contaminants (Article 4). In the previous
regulation, the restriction only applied to mycotoxins.

Limits have been adjusted for certain contaminants (Article 2) such as mycotoxins and more
specifically:

  •  Aflatoxins
  •  Ochratoxin A
  • Patulin
  • Deoxynivalenol
  • Zearalenone
  • Fumonisins
  • Citrinin
  •  Ergot sclerotia and ergot alkaloids

The maximum levels for each of these contaminants, including Mycotoxins, are specified in Annex 1 of the regulation.

Regarding these new maximum limits, transitional measures have been provided to allow economic
agents to prepare for the application of the new rules (Article 10).
